What do raspberries have to do with, well, everything vintage chenille? A lot, actually! We thought we’d share the story behind our new name, The Cottage Divine. Read on to find out how our new moniker came into existence…
The Beginnings of The Cottage Divine
When we made the decision to create a new website dedicated solely to our extensive collection of vintage chenille, we wanted our name to reflect that. Over the years, we’ve had the opportunity to meet some wonderful folks in the chenille world. Though we’ve enjoyed selling a variety of antiques, collectibles and other treasures over the years, we became most known for our large array of vintage chenille bedspreads, fabrics, robes, and more.
So we thought it would be pretty simple (no pun intended!) to create a name for our new site, right? There was only there was one slight problem – we couldn’t think of anything! Days went by, and we scribbled notes on shreds of paper, brainstormed names together, and asked close friends what they thought. But nothing really shouted “that’s it!” What were we to do?
Around here, there isn’t much we love more than chenille – but a few things come close. Things like homegrown berries and veggies, healthy, eco-friendly living, and of course, Mother Nature.
One morning we were enjoying breakfast together when my niece spotted a jar of our favorite organic raspberry jam by the brand Simple Truth.
Pointing to it, she exclaimed “That’s it!” And indeed, the rest is history. “Simple” became “Simply” and our new name “The Cottage Divine” was born.
What Does Charlotte Have to Do With All This Chenille?
Those of you who know us well may already be aware of this…the name “Charlotte” has been in our family for a long time. Charlotte Jane is our late grandma’s name, the lovely lady who inspired our passion for vintage chenille (and other antique linens, collectibles and just about everything “old”). Charlotte is also mom’s nickname and the inspiration behind the name for our chenille quilt sets, “Charlotte’s Cozy Quilt Squares.”
Did you know? “Charlotte” is a name of French origin and means “petite” and “feminine.” It’s been a popular name for some time: here in the States, the Social Security Administration reported it was the 11th most popular girl’s name in 2013. That same year, it ranked #1 in Australia for girls and #21 in England and Wales. Some “Charlottes” in popular culture include the late novelist Charlotte Brontë; Wilbur’s spider friend in Charlotte’s Web, and of course…the always-adorable Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.
